imagesMy husband and I lived overseas in Africa for one year back in the late ’80’s. We were in our early twenties – young and adventurous and naive, to say the least. I suspect that if we had waited much longer, maturity and reason would have set in causing us to so a much better job at preparing ourselves for what lay ahead.

There were so many things to know and too many things we didn’t know to ask. For instance, we assumed that there would be a similar state of order in foreign cities. We were wrong. In the city we lived in, law enforcement did not work like it does here … not even close. The city had no traffic lights and rarely a sign. While drivers always used the right lane, it was okay to go on over to the other side if no one was using it at the time. Most people walked making driving a real nightmare. It was mass confusion all the time.

We THOUGHT we’d done our homework before we embarked on our journey. But in the end, it turned out that we didn’t know nearly enough to make the transition smoothly. It was tough going!

It would have been great to have this article, 28 Things I Wish I’d Known Before I Started Traveling before we got on the plane. It would have saved me some anxiety and mistakes along the way.

Have you traveled overseas? What did you learn that would be helpful?
